At the beginning of 1970s doctor William Centerwall studied the immunity of Asian leopard cats to the virus of cat leucaemia. He crossed domestic cats with Asian leopard cats in order to show the inheritance of immunity. Immunity didn’t inherit. Investigations were interrupted because of the discovery of FeLV vaccine. After that in 1980 eight cats were given to Jean Sudgen.
Jean also got doctor Centerwall’s five cats from the other brood, three of which are known under calls Pennybank, Praline and Rorschach. In 1984 tomcat Millwood Tory of Dehli made his contribution on the breed Egyptian Mau and on the new line of spotty cats.
In 1986 Penny Ante from the second generation F2 manifested about itself to the whole world. She took part in 30 exhibitions and astonished the public by her beautiful “leopard” appearance. The breed was named Bengals from science domination of Asian leopard cats Felis bengalensis.
In 1983 The International Cat Association- (www.tica.org) was the first to confess Bengal breed. The breed was exhibited as “New Breed or coloration”. Then the breed acquired the official status and became the breed of the first category (set breed) in TICA.
